Some of the fears that block immersion are universally experienced, familiar to people across cultures and across generations:
The Fear of Letting Go
The Fear of Loss of Control
The Fear of Annihilation
The Fear of Emotions

You may experience any or all of these fears, either consciously or unconsciously, when facing immersion. Although there is no easy way to get past these fears, identifying their presence can help you make sense of your anxiety and resistance to immersion.

BE AWARE OF AND RESPECT THE FEARS YOU ARE FACING. Understand blocks as reasonable efforts at self-preservation. Don't interpret a block as evidence of your laziness, inadequacy, or unconscious wish for failure. Not only is this unhelpful; it is most likely untrue. Instead, take a deeper look at what fears you are facing. Is it a fear of inadequacy? A fear of your emotions? A fear of emptiness or having nothing to offer? A fear of annihilation of your identity or self-esteem? A fear of rejection? A fear of success? A fear of uncertainty and the unknown? A fear of exposure and humiliation?
Awareness of the fears that are blocking you is the first step in stretching beyond them. It is important to understand that these fears are not evidence of weakness. They are understandable and valid responses to previous experience. At one time, these fears helped you to adapt to and survive certain situations. Fears do not generally go away on their own. New experiences must convince you that it is now safe.
